DESIGN DIFFERENCE :
The Indianapolis race cars in comparison to the Formula 1 , are far less developed . Straight forward in their design with open wheel bodies and Mono-cue cockpits . The car is developed to do it's job of going in an oval only , and powered to get their in a hurry. The main difference is to keep the drag low helping the car slip stream the track when close to other racers. With much lower budgets than that of the F-1 racers , they have only one job and that's speed in a oval. The sound of the Indy is also very noticeably different. This is due to a design difference in the nosecone . Aerodynamics and a higher nosecone lets the air travel under the nose . This system is great for diffuser efficiency and down force , changing the sound at high rates of speed. The F-1 race car goes through advanced testing and design on their nosecones, helping the car go through it's constant changing speeds and directions. If looking at the nosecone on a F-1 , you'll see small wings on them. This is to create greater down force especially needed as the car rockets through the track.

Cad drawing of a 2012' Formula 1 racer :
Indianapolis racing has been an American tradition for over one hundred years . Originally the track was a crazy idea by a man called David Fisher. His idea was so that new car manufactures would have a place to test their cars for speed and endurance. He wanted a track five miles in an oval but , after seeing how expensive that would be he decided to settle for half that.
The track was built early in 1908' and finished one year later. Right away they had problems with the materials they used ,' crushed stones ' . It was causing problems with the cars and the drivers , almost killing one driver with flying stones. Remember at that time paving was a new concept and very costly. The use of using bricks was a common practice in 1908 to build roads and half the price of paving. Bricks were what they ended up using They added in for the first time banking to a track for high speed driving. This was a way to make the track feel longer , not having to slow down as much and giving the cars a better testing for top speeds.
Everyone started calling it the brickyard. The nick name ' Brickyard ' was given and as fate would have the name stuck. To this day the Brickyard is known world wide as the home of the Indy race . The only thing that hasn't stuck are the bricks , except at the finish line. A three foot wide row of bricks are the only bricks left of the original track. Note: it took three million two hundred thousand bricks at ten lbs. each to build the original track .The track was designed in an oval , and this is now the guild line for all Indy car race tracks. Indy racers always race in a oval . One of the major differences between the two cars.
Over the years names of drivers started to become as big as the race itself . A.J . Foyt , Al Unser , and most famous Mario Andretti just to name a few.
The ' Indianapolis 500 ' is America's biggest race . We want to see the most powerful cars and the most famous drivers each year and find out who the big winner is. Indy is always the big race of the year and runs at the mid-point of the Indy car racing season.

IZOD : This is a side by side difference. note the nose - straight with wings on cone about 8" off the ground. Lower rear wing and air intake with a much shorter body.
FORMULA 1 : Racer has a almost bowed front end with much more air flow. the car is longer - wider - higher. The front wheels further back .
What is the difference between F-1 and Indy racers .
Here is a side by side comparison.
