General Motors in 1953 with lead designer Mr. Harley Earl , gave birth to the idea of building the 'Corvette' . In the early days the General Motors Corvette was being thought of as an economical two seat car to get the family groceries , or for dad to carry his golf clubs to the club. Everything starts as an idea and usually turn out by going into a different direction . No different with the Corvette.
'Harley Earl' felt the timing was right , their was a large void in the market . He was convinced that 'America" was ready and most of all poised to take their extra disposable income and invest it into a second car. Why not a two seater like the Corvette. Maybe this could let G.M. try to create a new market of business.

Corvette chassis :
In the beginning their were none ! No American sports cars . No Corvettes - No Thunderbird's - No Mustangs - Nothing ! Gas wasn't the problem it was only 12 cents per gallon. It just wasn't something that american families had to have . Did we really want a car with only two seats ?
Europeans however , already had a heritage of building sports cars selling them and racing them. The G.I.'s coming home wanted the cars they saw over seas. Some of the G.I.'s simply brought them to america. We started importing them, usually some one wealthy. The one's coming from England had right hand steering but, that didn't seem to be a problem or even slow down the want. Their was a void in the american market but , it didn't look like the american manufactures thought that they should invest in some thing a sports car. After all american families needed the car to be big enough to carry everyone. Not a car with only two seats.
America was still recovering from the wars. We were to busy building highways and homes. Families were just starting to have little more , like the luxury of more money in their pockets.
Maybe now would be the perfect time thought visionary 'Harley Earl' to build a new kind of car and introduce it to a new customer base for the company. The smaller second car for the family, just to get around with and give it a sporty look. Now it's history , The American sports car was born.

Harley Earl
General Motors gave Mr. Earl their nod to work on a few experimental concepts. A number of different possibilities that GM's design studios would have to undertake.
Something totally different from what the companies normal philosophies were. This new car had to be right, it had to be a car that could be marketable , and be profitable for the company as well.
A unconventional way to build a car , building it would have to be with a new and inexpensive material to keep the bottom line as well easy in production . Mr. Earl looked the high production of the small boating industry. He was very impressed on how it seemed to match the needs of this new project and what he wanted to do.
He and his engineers both decided on the use of what the boating industry were using successfully ' Fiberglass ' . In this way they could design a car body , make it quickly and keep it under control in making a small economic car. This could revolutionize the automotive industry with a reliable product yet a cost effective build.
Today it's all history - Corvette's are still using 'fiberglass 60 years latter . Bowling Green Kentucky is also still the where Corvette is made and were it all started. Just a simple boat factory at the time . Now a legend.
